Camera and editing

Camera work

  • How images are sequenced will have a significant impact upon meaning
  • Certain camera shots and angles will create meanings for the audience of a music video and can be used to emphasise messages in the song or suggest qualities of the performer.

Editing

  • the most common form of editing associated with the music promo is fast cut montage, which makes many of the images impossible to grasp on first viewings (ensuring multiple viewing), there are videos which use slow pace and gentler transitions to establish mood.
  • This is particularly apparent for the work of many female solo artists with a broad audience appeal, such as adele.

How many shots on average are there in a music video?
It depends on style and genre. Between 1- hundreds.

How long do you think the average shot length is for a music video?
0.3- 5 seconds... 5 seconds is quite a long shot length.

What could affect the length of a shot music video?*AUDIENCE VIEWING* give and example
If there is a montage of extremely fast paced shots, then the audience will rewatch to try to make sense of it. This will result in more views, more social interaction and potentially result in more sales for the song.

Artist/song- Taylor swift- We are never getting back together
direct adress?- Taylor constantly looks into the camera and directly addresses the audience to make them feel involved in the situation and surroundings.
singing/ artist movement- Taylor swift uses al
Camera movement- The music video is filmed using a hand held camera (steadicam) which follows Taylor swift around, there is lots of use of of pan shots which glide into the next scene and setting. There is also a use of zoom to highlight to the audience what and who the song is about.
Editing- The music video is a one shot video meaning there is no editing and it is all shot as one long video, the use of this gives the video a sense of realism and allows the story to be told without any breaks or cuts.

Artist/ song- Sinead O'conner- Nothing compares 2u
Direct adress- The singer is always looking into the camera directly at the audience, as if to make us feel as though she is telling the story to us.
Singing/ Artist Movement- Sinead is completely still other than subtle head movements, we do not know about her body as it can't be seen.
Camera movement- In the video the camera is still and zoomed in onto the singers face, this keeps the audience engaged and interested in what she is saying.
Editing- At the beginning of the music video it contained lots of cuts in it allowing us to understand the beginning of the story, however when the video is focused on her there is no cuts at all, when we go back to the story we see more cuts and fading in it.
